Cloud Data Breaches: The Growing Threat Landscape

As businesses around the world continue their shift to the cloud to support modern working models, they are gaining the flexibility and agility needed to enable hybrid workforces to access data from anywhere. But with this shift comes security challenges, and the cloud data breach threat landscape is one that is becoming a growing concern for IT teams.

As more and more data is stored in the cloud, attacks targeting cloud resources are on the rise. Businesses must understand the threats, along with which ones pose a concern and look at the ways they can strengthen their security posture to keep their cloud environments and data protected.

Cloud Data Breach Stats Businesses Need to Know

The 2022 Thales Cloud Security Report  presents the findings of a global survey of almost 2,800 respondents across 17 countries and covers a broad range of industries, business sizes and job functions.

Let’s take a look at some of the key findings from the report:

  • 45% of businesses experienced a cloud-based data breach, or failed audit in the past 12 months, up 5% from 2021.
  • 32% of businesses had to inform the government, customers, partners, and employees, of a data breach.
  • 26% have experienced an increase in malware attacks and ransomware attacks against their endpoints.
  • 19% identified more phishing and whaling than a year ago.
  • 51% of IT professionals agree that it has become more complex to manage privacy and data protection in the cloud.
  • Only 11% of respondents have between 81-100% of their cloud data encrypted.

As cloud data breaches continue to become a growing concern for businesses of all shapes and sizes and across all industries, many will look to expand their in-house IT security teams to help them strengthen their defences and ensure best practices are in place for protecting cloud data.

Many will also look at the security solutions and platforms they can implement to help them harden their security posture and mitigate the risk of cloud data breaches.
