CV Tips: How to Get Noticed in 2022

The start of a new year is often the time many candidates start thinking about their career goals and embarking on a new challenge. The first step in their journey is updating their CV to begin sending to recruiters and prospective employers.

Undeniably, the UK recruitment market has undergone a massive transformation since 2020. Competition for vacancies is at an all-time high, making it crucial for candidates to ensure their CV gets them noticed.

What should a CV include in 2022?

According to Indeed, employers spend on average 6-7 seconds looking at a candidates CV, which is why it is imperative that your CV grabs their attention quickly and doesn’t get ignored. But while this stat may seem off-putting at first, understanding that hiring managers and employers simply do not have the time to read every CV they receive can help you create a better CV.

Much like the workplace the CV has changed somewhat over the last few years, consider the following points to help your CV stand out:

  1. Tailor your CV to the job description and aim for no more than two sides of A4.
  2. Include keywords from the job description.
  3. Write a concise but strong personal statement - no more than two sentences. Focus on who you are, your experience and relevant skills.
  4. Trim irrelevant information - only cover the last 10 years of employment
  5. Consider the design of your CV. Make sure it is clear, simple, well formatted and professional.
  6. Use bullet points to list skills to make it easier to read.
  7. Give an overview of your qualifications and personal details
  8. Remove any references as these are not required until an offer has been made.

Tips to make your CV stand out in 2022

The transformation in the way we work over the last two years will continue in 2022 and beyond, flexible and remote working will continue to increase. Here are a few ideas of things you can include in your CV to help you stand out to recruiters and hiring managers on the lookout for new talent.

Include work from home experience

Many of us have worked from home over the last two years, and it is an attractive quality for many employers, so be sure to include any work from home experience you have. Include any remote working platforms and collaboration tools you have used to demonstrate your experience and comfort in working remotely.

Add a personal development section

Think about the job requirements and any online courses or other courses you have completed and be sure to include them in your CV. These will demonstrate that you value your professional development, as well as your keenness to progress and show key traits such as self-motivation and the ability to learn unsupervised.

Talk about results rather than responsibilities

Rather than simply listing the tasks you were responsible try to include tangible results, such as “I led the redevelopment of the company website. In the following 6 months website sales conversion rates increased by 39%.” This shows how your work impacted the company and improved business outcomes.
